New Gelding Program to be Tested in California in 2011
A statewide gelding clinic program will be conducted at various locations throughout California in 2011. This program is intended to help economically challenged horse owners castrate their colts and stallions at a minimum cost and to decrease equine breeding at a time when there is a surplus of horses in the United States.

Guidelines Help Former Racehorses Go From Track to New Careers
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has developed guidelines to help veterinarians and adoption groups successfully transition retired racehorses to new homes and new careers. "Transitioning the Retired Racehorse: Guidelines for Equine Practitioners, Adoption Organizations and Horse Owners" provides an overview of the common physical challenges affecting some former racehorses and helps establish expectations for a horse's future capabilities.

2011 NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance Standards Approved
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) board of directors has approved the organization's Safety and Integrity Alliance 2011 Code of Standards. The compliance standards will serve as the basis for future racetrack Alliance accreditation, including the re-accreditation of tracks accredited by the Alliance when it was founded in 2009.

New Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Adoption Program a Success
The partnership between the Pennsylvania Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) and New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program is fully up and running. The program started taking horses in November and to date has taken in 24 horses.

SDSU Students Outline Unwanted Horse Problem
The number of unwanted horses in the United States is growing by nearly 150,000 a year since the closing of the last U.S. slaughter plants, and no single, easy solution is in sight. Those were some conclusions of a study conducted by students in South Dakota State University’s animal and range sciences department.
