This is our dream to help horses, I am disabled and my husband is retired. we work with the sheriff Dept in four counties. We pick up unwanted and neglected horses and rehabilitate them and find them good homes. We have place 12 horses and donkeys in good homes this past year. We have a 12 stall barn, a two stall stallion barn, we have a quarantine stall with paddock, and our pastures are divided. This is our home farm and we are here all the time. We have some of our own horses along with the ones that we rescue. The first animal we rescued was a donkey that teenagers were dragging down the road behind a pickup truck. When we went to get him my husband and a friend had to pick him up to put him on the trailer. We checked him and he had no fur left on one side and he could not stand on one leg. The vet said his leg wasn''t broken so we gave antibiotics and a tetanus shot.
Today he is happy and healthy and I call him my
watch donkey because I keep him in my front yard.
I fell in love with him and had to keep him. Return to Top

Open the Gate Inc., is a non-profit 501(c)(3). I have been with horses 30+yrs, having a natural ability to communicate with the misunderstood, mistreated, abused and unhealthy. From wild to retired rodeo broncs, they find me and we begin our journey through rehabilitation, re-building trust, mental and physical health, anger issues, and their best qualities until they are ready to go back into society. Each potential new owner is also evaluated, including their facility, their time to devote, their attitude, and most of all their reason for purchase. Some are urged to lease until they are sure this is something they can devote to as long as the horse lives. The lease program saves the horse from the tramuas of moving, realtionships, bonding, and the possiblity of being abandoned again.
Our therapy program included horses and other animal assisted therapy for special needs children to enjoy a special time outdoors and bond with animals. Many of the rescued horses end up being the best for the therapy program and have been adopted by the special needs families.
In 2008 we will be opening our doors to the Veterans with disabilities to improve the quality of life and introduce them to an alternative career in the equine field.

Full time, lifetime horsepeople. We have done nothing else but horses since 1967. Although a sales facility specializing in family horses...we have always educated first time horse buyers so that they are aware that the purchase price of a horse is not all that is involved. We have found that some people who "mistreat" horses have not done so on purpose but because they have not been educated in the care and expense involved in owning a horse. we have rescued many, many starving or mistreated horses, accepted any horses that needed help..rehabilitated, retrained and placed in "forever" homes. Since moving to Florida in 1999 have had many TB horses placed with us by local breeders and who were no longer wanted for whatever reasonwe pride ourselves in the fact that we have found the proper homes for each and every horse that we have handled. We are totally committed to "giving back" to the magnificent animal that we love and that has given us so much in our lifetime. We have been heartsick over the present controversy of horse slaughter in the U.S...the forming of this coalition is an extremely important step for the welfare of an animal that this country has depended on since the beginning of its foundation. We urge the lawmakers to consider every aspect of this issue to prevent the neglect of "unwanted horses" and also to remember that by banning regulated operations here in the U.S., we are also subjecting horses to much more cruelty by being shipped by people to facilities that have no "watchdogs" to govern the fate of the horse..and to have horses turned loose to fend for themselves and starve to death, or freeze to death and have no one to care for them is unacceptable. We have taught our animals to depend on us....we must be there for them.
Remember....what horses can do for humans is absolutely awesome...In Ohio we maintained a program for a local "at risk" children''''s state facility....these kids came to our farm and had to have one counselor for each 3 children...that''''s how volatile they were...the kids didn''''t even have to ride when they came...we just introduced them to brushing, petting, leading...they just met the horses....I can tell you that you have never in your life seen anything like the blossoming and softening of these children when they placed their hands on the soft coats of the horse and the child''''s sad, hostile, confused eyes looked into the large soft understanding eyes of the horse. The use of the horse in today''''s society is still an awesome one.....Sincerely, Bud & Lydia Lauck Return to Top

Traveller's Rest Farm is a small family owned and operated 34 acre equine retirement and layup facility located in Southern Maryland's beautiful Charles County.
We are not a rescue or a not-for-profit, although we support local rescues that are. To that end, we do not take in donated horses.
We believe that every horse deserves their retirement, in fact, this farm was purchased and is named after our very own Traveller. He was our riding horse well into his teens and this farm was purchased specifically so he would have a permanent place to retire to. He is pictured above and still oversees all farm operations.
All our horses are treated to daily turnout in compatible groups ranging from 2 - 4 animals and given lots of love and attention on a daily basis. We operate solely for the comfort and safety of our horses and are dedicated to giving your horse the same care and love we do our own.
Traveller's Rest Farm, its owners and affiliates promise to care for your horse as our own and treat them with the respect and dignity they deserve. Return to Top

I have accepted ⢬tually, they were just left here when their owners moved on) 4 older horses and have found that they are the best for teaching children and adults about the joys of learning to ride. I give them the supplements and the correct feed they need and they give minimal riding lessons and trailrides. These guys are the best. I have a need for more horses between say 6 yrs. to 25 years, but only a few. They would have lasting homes. There we teach them basic care, etc. My family runs a small home for teengage girls so, we use them as well with our facility. We have Rescued 2 horses thus far and had a beautiful little horse donated to us. We are still growing a learning, but would love to help out in any way we can. Just moved are barn to larger acreage, but right now we only have a 5 stall barn, but are rennovating everything as it was an older structure and have capacity for at least 15.
